I am a thirtysomething half Armenian, one quarter Irish and one quarter Swedish fiber artist with a background in painting. A number of years ago, when I was primarily a painter, I learned to knit. I began to notice a disturbing value judgement emerge that I considered my painting to be my serious "work" and my knitting to be leisure time, or goofing off. I started making art that combined the materials of painting (canvas, oils, beeswax) with fiber in the form of stitching, knitting, and weaving. This became my Fine Art/Fiber Art Series, and I have been working primarily with Fiber since.
In 2005 my sister and I visited Armenia and my failed attempts to speak basic travellers Armenian prompted an interest in studying the Armenian language at its starting point- the Armenian alphabet. The letters are visually appealing to me as an artist, and I began to draw them, small in a sketchbook, and on large sheets of newsprint to cover my studio walls. Most recently I have been making felted stencils of the letters, to spell out words from my family's history on my studio walls.
I started this journal to document the progress of my Armenian Alphabet series and to chart out the different directions that it is taking me.
